Something Different – Part II

Something Different – Part II

As with my last post of this title, I’m still looking for ways to break the mould of mediocrity that is sports portraits. The same-old-same-old just won’t do any more. Of course, there’s always the problem of finding inspiration. Making sure you have the necessary equipment (although in most cases you really don’t need anything … Continue reading »

Something Different

Something Different

As a parent, and especially as a photographer, I’m tired of seeing the same team pictures year after year after year. Standard group shot. Standard player portrait in a standard player pose. Boring. It was time to shake things up a little bit. It was time to try something different.

Chaos With Order, Order With Chaos

Chaos With Order, Order With Chaos

I never seemed to be successful at photographing still-life and detail shots. I tried on a number of occasions but it just never worked. It got to the point where I gave up trying. I wouldn’t even look for opportunities and, if I somehow stumbled across one inadvertently, I’d quickly shake the thought from my … Continue reading »

TED Talks Art and Creativity

I was first introduced to TED Talks a little over a year ago. The speakers come from many different walks of life. Some are famous, and some may be quite unfamiliar. The topics, too, are quite varied and range from business to science to technology to much, much more. There seems to be something for … Continue reading »

Hockey Photography – Old School

Hockey Photography – Old School

I love my 1D-series camera. I love my L-series lenses. I can’t imagine shooting without them. I wouldn’t give them up without a fight. Sometimes, though, I find the need to revert to a previous era. I get an overwhelming desire to shed the technology and return to simpler times. No in-camera digital processors, no … Continue reading »

I Don’t Care

I don’t care. I really don’t care. I really don’t care if it breaks a rule. I really don’t care if it breaks every rule in the book. I love negative spaces.

Candids, Not Portraits

Candids, Not Portraits

It’s funny. I hate taking portraits. I love taking candids. Some might argue they are the same, but I don’t think so. To me a portrait is controlled, contrived. It’s artificial somehow, no matter how talented the photographer may be, no matter how capable he or she is in presenting the subject in a natural … Continue reading »

It’s Not About the Gear – Part II

A while back I wrote a post about funding an expansion to my photography and photo business. I mentioned I was looking at acquiring items that could help to improve my skills, expand my knowledge, and increase my opportunities. More importantly, I mentioned I was not looking at purchasing new gear. I didn’t, and still … Continue reading »

It’s Not Your Decision

Although I have several drafts in various stages of completion, and a few more ideas for new posts to-boot, I hadn’t really planned on adding any new blog entries for a little while. I simply have too much on the go at the moment, all of which must take priority over this blog. However, I … Continue reading »

Make Mistakes

A few years ago, as I was being welcomed to a new job, my new boss looked at me from across his desk and said “Feel free to make mistakes, just don’t make the same one twice.” At first it seemed a little odd, as if he was not only saying it was acceptable to … Continue reading »
